Smart & Final is a California-based hybrid warehouse/grocery chain with about 250 stores across the Western U.S. and Mexico. Unlike Costco or Sam's, no membership is required, so any shopper can walk in and buy bulk packaged goods alongside normal grocery items. Merchant category coding is the gotcha here: most Smart & Final stores historically code as warehouse club rather than supermarket, which means a grocery bonus card (Amex Gold, Blue Cash Preferred) may not trigger its multiplier. Coding can vary by location, so check a recent statement before assuming a category bonus applies.
