Our take

The Venmo card's appeal is that it does the category optimization for you: each statement period it automatically pays 3% on your highest-spend eligible category and 2% on the second, drawn from eight options including groceries, dining, travel, transit, entertainment, gas, utilities, and health and beauty. That means you never have to activate or guess right, which is genuinely useful if your spending shifts month to month. Everything outside those two categories earns 1%, so the card's real value depends on how concentrated your spending is; if it's spread evenly, a flat 2% card will beat this. There's no annual fee and no foreign transaction fee, but there's also no signup bonus, and the regular APR runs a high 18.74% to 30.74%. Best treated as a set-and-forget everyday card for someone with clearly lopsided spending.
