Chase no longer accepts applications for the Freedom, so it only matters now if you already hold one. If you do, it still earns 5% on rotating quarterly categories on up to $1,500 of spend each quarter, which for Q3 2026 covers gas stations and EV charging, public transit, and select live entertainment, then drops to 1% past the cap. Everything outside those categories earns a flat 1%, so the card only pays off if you activate each quarter and deliberately steer the right spending to it. There is no annual fee, which makes it painless to keep open for the credit history even in quarters you skip. Anyone shopping for this profile today should look at the Freedom Flex, its direct successor, or the Freedom Unlimited if rotating categories are more bother than they are worth.
