The Apple Card fits a phone-first wallet better than almost anything else: 2% Daily Cash on any purchase you pay for through Apple Pay, and 3% on Apple's own purchases and a fixed list of partners including Nike, Uber, Walgreens, Booking.com, Exxon Mobil and Hertz when you pay that same way. The condition attached to those rates is the whole story. Tap or swipe the physical titanium card instead and you earn 1%, which is the card's true base rate, so the value depends entirely on how many of the places you shop accept Apple Pay. There is no annual fee and no foreign transaction fee, so holding it costs nothing, and extras like a six-month Uber One trial and 2% in Booking.com travel credits on stays booked through the Apple Card portal are modest but real. If a lot of your spending happens where Apple Pay does not reach, a flat 2% card will simply beat it.
